PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES CALL FOR MORE WETLANDS

By LeAnn M. Harner, LAND Executive Director

On Earth Day, both President Bush and Senator John Kerry agreed on one issue—wetlands.

President Bush said, “So today I’m committing our government to a new policy. We will move beyond the no-net-loss of wetlands in America to having an overall increase of American wetlands over the next five years.”

Senator Kerry’s campaign released a statement saying Kerry will ensure that the USFWS will “immediately develop and implement a comprehensive plan to reverse this trend [of wetland loss] and restore hundreds of thousands of acres of wetlands that have been lost over the last few decades.”

Landowners must remain vigilant.
