President's Report
By Richard Volk, LAND President
Hello, my name is Richard Volk. I’ve been elected to be your LAND leader for the year 2002. I first heard of LAND when it was organized in 1989. I became a member about 5 years later. I really became interested after I attended an annual meeting in Devils Lake.
My wife Kaye and I live on the family farm which my father moved onto in 1921. We rented the land from my father and mother until we bought it from the estate. We had four children of which three are living. The oldest died at the age of ten in a farm accident .One daughter and two sons have received their degrees from UND.
When asked to be a director in LAND, my interest increased. A time I will always remember is when a soil conservationist was mapping soils on the farm land and my dad came out to the field and asked me who the person was. When I explained, my father said "don’t ever let those people on your land or they will eventually control you." I believe he was right.
To me, one of the most important aspects of the coming year, will be to watch CARA or “Son of CARA.” (related story inside) It is one of our greatest duties to express our opposition to our congressmen, not only as directors but you as members. This legislation is extremely detrimental to private property owners. We look to you as members to let us know what you are thinking. Remember constructive criticism is the one of the best ways of learning.
Always remember, LAND was formed to protect your property rights. With your help we can do a lot.
