President's Report
By Richard Volk, LAND President
Hello, from east central North Dakota. Easter is just a few days away. I don’t really know where all the time has gone. Seems to slip by faster every year.
In a few weeks we will be in the fields and I am not so sure we know what to plant to make a profit. I guess we were waiting for a new anxiously waiting for a new farm bill. (Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just farm and make a living without the government?) but that didn’t materialize.
The big issue in the last month or so was the early hunting season for pheasants. I attended a couple meetings and it seemed the biggest issue is access. Is it wrong for the property owner to charge to hunt?
I don’t think so. When I go to a concert in Fargo or whatever, I have to pay ticket, parking and there’s a large crowd. Private home owners will let you park on their property for a price and this is the same for a farmer.
Our next legislature will have many bills pertaining to hunting and "access" and LAND will be there trying to protect private property rights.
Recently you received a book of tickets in the mail for our raffle. We decided to do this the last couple years to pay our expenses. Our only other source of revenue is membership so if you don’t purchase the tickets please get a membership or two - Better yet do both.
