President's Report
By Don Berge, LAND President
It’s amazing how much thinking you do during spring’s work! No doubt many of us have taken the time to reflect on the goals of our businesses and to position ourselves to protect our property rights.
This past December, I was able to attend several presentations at the NDSU Northern Ag Expo with these objectives in mind. One presentation in particular caught my eye—”Advances in One Pass Seeding.” This technique was well-presented be displaying the latest technologies making it possible. We have all probably witnessed “one pass seeding” first hand or actually begun the practice. We have to commend the machinery and chemical companies for developing products which allow this practice. This method could not have occurred if their resources hadn’t been committed to research and development and all of its years of testing. Tremendous savings are achieved by being able to devote less capital for labor, equipment and energy.
What does this have to do with property rights, you ask? The answer to this question presented itself during his summary of the highlights of the presentation. He hurriedly read his enumerated statements, but overlooked this four word item—”IT MAY BE LEGISLATED.” When he called for questions, I asked him to explain. He said he didn’t have enough time, but we could discuss it later. After two more questions, the meeting ended and I’m still waiting for the explanation. I guess we’ll learn more in the future.
The LAND Board of Directors have pledged to write at least one letter to the editor on LAND issues each month. Bob Lebacken kicked off this effort with a letter about CREP. I hope you’ve seen his letter in your daily paper. Better yet, I hope these letters may inspire you to write your own letters!
I appreciate the feedback from members. I’m looking forward to hearing from you again.
