Freedom, whether it’s political or economic, is relative. The big picture should always be kept in view. Perceiving proverbial silver linings is difficult when only one side of situations is presented by those representing authority.
Those of us involved in agriculture find ourselves in the minority. Regulations such as Swampbuster, which has expanded beyond the original congressional intent, are making economic development a moot point in rural areas. Abraham Lincoln could have been talking about today when he said, “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.” Too many times I’ve seen development in populated areas that would only be a dream in rural areas. Just last night a television ad advised everyone to be sure all standing water was removed in order to prevent West Nile disease. Could that little slough 100 feet from my farm house be removed? Not on your life!
Recently Vice President Dick Cheney said, “it is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you.” Let’s keep our troops in mind around the world as we celebrate the Fourth of July. They are sacrificing much on our behalf. Their efforts allow us to be free and enable all of us to debate openly the policies that we as individuals deem heavy-handed and mean-spirited.
Have a safe holiday.
