President's Report - Read the fine print - Non-profit Land Acquisition

By Don Berge, LAND President

We all can recall the warning “Please read the fine print.” Lately, it has been brought to LAND’S attention that a property acquisition has ignored the bold print as well as the fine print.

On August the 18th, former LAND President Dennis Miller attended a hearing at the Griggs County courthouse in Cooperstown concerning a recent land purchase by a non-profit organization named Crosslands. The proper procedure for purchase as mandated by the ND Century Code had not been followed. One of the mandates is that public input must be taken into consideration. In addition, county and local government must be permitted an advisory role. Due to the negative impact on the local economy, all testimony was in opposition. Drains would be impeded to the point that their infrastructure would be in jeopardy. Water tables are already to the brim, and roads would be impossible to maintain. When will these out-of-state entities play by the rules like the rest of us?

LAND was the only farm group present. Hopefully, a wake-up call can be given to the other farm groups since insurance or check-off financed projects shouldn’t be their only main focus. If this constant onslaught on our rural communities is not stemmed, production agriculture will no longer be an option for the next generation.

Governor Hoeven has been notified by LAND, but a phone call to his office by each of us could help. He needs to hear our concerns.

Reading the fine print will continue to be important. Let us remember that the fine print concerning Swampbuster and other regulations was concocted by bureaucrats after the property acquisition action was underway.

Since our last newsletter, we’re happy to inform you that we are moving ahead with plans for the petition process outlined last month. Thanks for all of the input and encouragement that has been received from many of you.

By working together, we will have an impact that sees no limit.
