President's Report

By Richard Volk, LAND President

Welcome to the October issue of the LAND newsletter. This has got to be the most difficult harvest I have had in my forty years of farming. The small grains are mostly off and the bean harvest is poised to go as soon as the soil dries a bit. Some farmers have gotten a few acres off but the greatest majority, and I'm one of them, are just getting started.

The price of wheat has gone up and it will be interesting to see how many farmers will sell near the top and how many will wait while the price goes back down. Looking back forty years wheat has only sold for four dollars per bushel four or five times at the most.

There are many things happening with LAND. The bad part is the board of directors are so busy that they don’t have time to attend many functions and make themselves known or heard. I was very disgusted when the Core of Engineers delayed the Environmental Impact Study for the Devils Lake outlet. To me it would make more sense to have a controlled outlet than to have the lake go out by itself, and in time it will do that! It has proven that by overflowing 5-6 times, before white man ever came to this country.

Remember the Annual Meeting December 3rd in Harvey. Ric Frost will be a great speaker!
